What is the Future of Air Mobility accelerator?

Future of Air Mobility (FAM) accelerator is a new to market, challenge-led 6 month mobility accelerator programme powered by Connected Places Catapult.

In partnership with the Future Flight Challenge from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the accelerator will be selecting 12 SMEs to join a 6-month programme, where they will receive support from a consortium of industry, academic and regulatory partners on the trial and testing of disruptive innovations.

Connected Places Catapult is delivering the programme in partnership with Plus X who will support the SMEs through a bespoke programme roadmap tailored to their requirements, including investment readiness, technology and product development support, alongside introductions to aviation stakeholders and potential customers. These activities will be co-designed with SMEs in order to grow their businesses and adapt propositions to programme partner requirements.

SMEs will have the opportunity to access funding through the accelerator programme, which will be used for the testing and trailing of live demonstrations. However, funding is not guaranteed and will be reviewed on a project-by-project basis by the programme partners.

"The Future Flight Challenge is actively looking to push the boundaries of aviation technology and encourage new players into the market. We are delighted to be working with Connected Places Catapult to deliver this accelerator programme, providing SMEs a great opportunity to trial and test  their disruptive innovations"

Simon Masters, Deputy Director, UKRI Future Flight Challenge

Challenge 1
Data Driven Aviation

We're looking at how we can better capture and utilise data to increase operational and commercial efficiency within the aviation industry. Whether this is with the collection on-aircraft, airside operations or customer data, we would like to see how data gathered can enhance decision-making.

How can data be used to support more efficient and profitable operations within the aviation industry?

We're looking for solution that include:

  • Passenger demand forecasting to more effectively manage passenger flow through airports.
  • Automatic detections of passengers, hazards and threats within the airport environment

How can data be used to support airports in delivering more integrated MaaS solutions?

We're looking for solution that include:

  • Identification and management of seamless end-to-end journeys.
  • Integration of airport services with other transport modes and operations

Challenge 2
Smart Airports

We're looking at how we can integrate the next generation of autonomous solutions into airport management and security operations, alongside exploring disruptive technologies that will support the aviation industry in reaching NetZero targets.

How can we accelerate the delivery of automated solutions into the airport environment?

We're looking for solution that include:

  • Testing an verification systems to validate new automated solutions for example automated ground handling, autonomous vehicles air/land side, fleet management and predictive maintenance solutions.

How can we leverage technology to support airports in achieving NetZero operations?

We're looking for solution that include:

  • Energy demand forecasting and management
  • Energy operations and safety management
  • Integrated operational management solutions

How can we increase the efficiency of passengers moving through the airport and security processes?

We're looking for solution that include:
Automated passenger identification and monitoring

  • Automated detection of threats contained within passengers or baggage
  • Measuring and improving the customer experience when moving through the airport

Challenge 3
Advanced Air Mobility

We're looking at how we can accelerate the development of Advanced Air Mobility by exploring  the systems, infrastructure technologies and modelling and simulation tools required for commercialisation

How can we use technology to effectively model the infrastructure and commercial requirements of AAM systems?

We're looking for solution that include:

  • Simulation and forecasting of future AAM environments
  • Infrastructure and energy forecasting and management
  •  Integrated design and planning

How can we accelerate the deployment of  AAM systems and infrastructure?

We're looking for solutions that include:

  • Integrated Aerospace Management
  • Integration into new and legacy aviation and mobility systems
  • Integrated energy and systems infrastructure

How can we more effectivly engage with the public to increase advocacy for AAM?

We're looking for solutions that include:

  • Human-centered design approaches to AAM design and development
Public engagement, including sentiment analysis and tracking
  • Simulation tools that support public engagement and informed decision making
